Sustainability
Net-Zero by 2030
Milbank's ambition is to be the most sustainable supplier of precast concrete products in the UK.
Since 2018, Milbank has reduced its Scope 1 and 2 CO₂ emissions by 61%, to approximately 350 tonnes per year. It has committed to net-zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030, 20 years ahead of UK government targets, and is developing plans to address Scope 3 emissions across its wider supply chain.
Detailed emissions data is published annually in the Milbank Group Impact Report.
Reductions measured against a 2018 baseline
Low-Carbon Concrete and Manufacturing
Through advanced mix design and cement replacement technology, Milbank has reduced cement content by up to 21% without compromising performance. This is expected to remove over 2,800 tonnes of CO₂e from its products each year. Since the 2018 baseline, embodied carbon has fallen by up to 20% in prestressed products (beams and hollowcore) and by over 33% in precast products (stairs, landings, columns and ground beams).
An Ultra Low Carbon Hollowcore product is in the latter stages of trials, with launch anticipated in late 2026 or early 2027. Using almost 60% less cement than the standard mix, the product represents an exciting growth opportunity for Milbank, with the potential to create a significant point of differentiation in the market. In 2025, Milbank also launched its in-house Carbon Reduction Calculator, providing transparent carbon data with every quotation.
Energy, Transport and Resource Efficiency
Milbank has achieved a 44% reduction in overall energy usage since 2018. More than 800 solar panels across both production facilities generate around 306,000 kWh per year, powering all of the specialist precast factory and around half of the prestressed factory. A biomass boiler fuelled by carbon-neutral wood pellets supports the curing process. In 2024, Milbank became the first UK precast manufacturer to introduce a fully electric concrete transporter.
All deliveries are made using HVO-powered vehicles. HVO cuts CO₂ emissions per mile by up to 98% compared with conventional diesel, saving more than 745 tonnes of CO₂ a year. A new on-site borehole now supplies water to the prestressed factory. Around 80% of the water in Milbank's concrete mix is already recycled, and the aim is for all production water to be sourced and managed on site. Milbank is also ISO 14001 certified and rated Zero Waste to Landfill.
Community and Long-Term Impact
Beyond environmental performance, Milbank is committed to creating long-term social value. The business donates a minimum of 2% of profits to local community initiatives. It also works closely with customers and supply chain partners to drive more sustainable outcomes across the construction industry.
